Pow X Disco Deviant: Maurice Fulton, The Emperor Machine (Live)
Maurice Fulton is unpredictable and one of a kind. In an age of social media and press savvy DJ’s, Maurice rejects the new norm, and stands firmly in favour of letting his music do the talking. We’ve been there when he’s absolutely smashed it, nailing down an immaculate set only to suddenly stop the music and insist a photographer get out his face and the club lighting be dialled down low, before embarking on a deeper and ever more soulful final hour, taking the crowd to another level entirely in the process.
Risky and unconventional, exciting and raw; Fulton embodies all of the above as a DJ, however when you compare this with the precision and quality of his production and remixes an artistic paradox is evident. His signature sound being super tight percussion, finely tuned effects and hallucinogenic arrangements.
The Emperor Machine (LIVE): aka Andrew Meecham is one of the UK’s most cherished and respected producers. As part of Bizarre Inc, he crafted ’90s club classics alongside Dean Meredith before re-emerging in the early ’00s as Chicken Lips, whose stripped-back, dubbed-out disco jams reflected a re-emergence of the cosmic sound. The Emperor Machine has remixed everyone from The Knife and The Rapture to Erol Alkan, Andrew Weatherall and Daft Punk. In 2019, he’s back on Skint Records with a new single and more to come on the legendary label.
His live show is a laptop-free affair, preferring dual MPCs to a glowing Apple logo, with an array of synths and samplers that are changing all the time.
His latest release ‘Two Voice’ has prompted plaudits from a range of sources including a 9.5/10 from DJ Mag making it Disco Tune of the month in October. DJ Harvey, The Juan Maclean, Man Power and Roman Flugel have all been singing the Emperor’s praises and we are pumped at the prospect of having him coming to play for us. ‘All Hail The Machine’ as Andrew Weatherall aptly puts it.
Pablo Contraband: Disco Deviant’s resident selector for over a decade, regularly playing all over the UK + Europe as well as joining us at PoW and Brixton Disco Festival.
